- Raising awareness of patient safety challenges associated with non-communicable diseases across all stages of healthcare delivery, while considering disease-related factors, health system challenges, and influencing social determinants.
- Empowering patients and communities to actively participate in identifying risks and collaborating with healthcare practitioners and decision-makers in developing solutions.
- Encouraging relevant stakeholders to integrate patient safety principles into legislation, policies, strategies, and programmes related to non-communicable diseases.
- Strengthening the capacities of healthcare workers to implement safer practices, including accurate diagnosis, safe care practices, and effective patient engagement.

Providing safe care for patients remains a fundamental priority; however, newborns and children are particularly vulnerable to patient safety risks. Studies show that adverse events affect children across all levels of care, especially in intensive care units. To spotlight this critical issue, the theme for World Patient Safety Day 2025 is "Safe care for every newborn and every child," emphasizing the urgent need to protect them from preventable harm during healthcare.
This year's theme aligns with broader global efforts, including the pursuit of Universal Health Coverage and Sustainable Development Goal 3.2, and initiatives like the "Every Woman, Every Newborn, Everywhere Action Plan," the "Child Survival Action Initiative," and the "Global Strategy for Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health 2016–2030."
Under the slogan "Patient safety from the start!", WHO calls for urgent actions to eliminate avoidable harm in paediatric and newborn care. Focus areas include safe childbirth and postnatal care, medication safety, diagnostic safety, immunization safety, infection prevention, and early recognition of clinical deterioration.
- Raise global awareness of safety risks in paediatric and newborn care across all healthcare settings, emphasizing the specific needs of children, families, and caregivers.
- Mobilize governments, healthcare organizations, professional bodies, and civil society to implement sustainable strategies for safer care for newborns and children.

World Patient Safety Day is being celebrated annually on September 17, aiming to enhance global understanding and solidarity towards promoting patient safety. This year's theme, “Improving Diagnosis for Patient Safety," underscores the significance of accurate and timely diagnoses in preventing patient harm. Diagnostic errors, contributing to 16% of preventable harm, often result from a mix of cognitive and system factors, emphasizing the need for comprehensive and systematic interventions.
The slogan for 2024, “Get it right, make it safe!", encourages multifaceted strategies involving patients, families, healthcare workers, and leaders to reduce diagnostic errors. Key interventions include thorough patient history assessments, clinical examinations, improved access to diagnostic tests, and the implementation of technology-based solutions.
Objectives for WPSD 2024:
- Raise global awareness of errors in diagnosis contributing to patient harm and emphasize the pivotal role of correct, timely and safe diagnosis in improving patient safety.
- Give prominence to diagnostic safety in patient safety policy and clinical practice at all levels of health care, aligned with the Global Patient Safety Action Plan 2021–2030.
- Foster collaboration among policy-makers, health care leaders, health workers, patient organizations, and other stakeholders in advancing correct, timely and safe diagnosis.
- Empower patients and families to actively engage with health workers and health care leaders to improve diagnostic processes.
To mark the day, various activities such as national campaigns, social media initiatives. Iconic landmarks and buildings will be illuminated in orange to symbolize the commitment to improving diagnostic safety.

| World Patient Safety Day calls for global solidarity and concerted action by all countries to improve patient safety and brings together patients, families, caregivers, communities, health workers, healthcare leaders, and policymakers to show their commitment to patient safety.
Each year, a new theme is selected as a priority patient safety topic to highlight its importance and call for urgent action to address the issue. This year (WHO urges all stakeholders to participate in the global campaign under the theme "Engaging patients for patient safety" through the slogan “Elevate the voice of patients!", in recognition of the crucial role patients, families, and caregivers play in the safety of health care.
Patient and family engagement was embedded in Resolution WHA72.6 – “Global action on patient safety" and the Global Patient Safety Action Plan 2021-2030 as main strategies for moving towards eliminating avoidable harm in health care.
Based on the work and the Saudi Patient Safety Center Specialties, we are working to encourage all healthcare facilities to participate and activate the WPSD campaign 2022 with the slogan “Elevate the voice of patients!" to spread awareness and work together to make healthcare safer.

Light up in orange to celebrate World Patient Safety Day:
Lighting up iconic monuments, landmarks, and public places in orange is the signature mark of World Patient Safety Day. The color orange symbolizes the central role patient safety plays in countries' efforts to achieve universal health coverage.
The Saudi Patient Safety Center works yearly in collaboration with governmental entities to light up iconic monuments, landmarks, and public places in orange at the national level, and encourages all healthcare facilities to light up their hospital buildings in orange is the signature mark of World Patient Safety Day.

WHO – World Patient Safety Day:
Medications are the most widely utilized interventions in health care, and medication-related harm constitutes the greatest proportion of the total preventable harm due to unsafe care, let alone the economic and psychological burden imposed by such harm. Acknowledging this substantial burden and recognizing the complexity of medication-related harm prevention and reduction. the theme of World Patient Safety Day 2022 is “Medication Safety".
