Salama Friends Program
About Salamah Friends in schools
There is increasing recognition that the first few years of a child's life are a particularly sensitive period in the process of development, laying a foundation in childhood and beyond for cognitive functioning; behavioral, social, and self-regulatory capacities; and physical health. Yet many children face various stressors during these years that can impair their healthy development. Early childhood intervention programs are designed to mitigate the factors that place children at risk of poor outcomes. Such programs provide supports for the parents, the children, or the family as a whole. These supports may be in the form of learning activities or other structured experiences that affect a child directly or that have indirect effects.
Health empowerment has major implications for how we perceive children's health. We believe that a shift will be necessary from thinking about children as recipients of health care on their behalf to accepting children as active participants in the whole process. In turn, this will entail the acknowledgement of children's concerns about health as valid in their own right; and a recognition of their competence to make and implement decisions.
With the direction of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to develop in all sectors, and because of the importance of cooperation between sectors, the Saudi Patient Safety Center has cooperated with the Ministry of Education for the implementation of Salama Friends Project in schools. Which aims to improve the patient safety culture and health empowerment of the students.
The program started in January 2019 and showed positive results on the students. Therefore, the program seeks to expand to all regions of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
